The army chief thanked the prime minister for his unremitting support in achieving Bangladesh’s peacekeeping mission

Bangladesh has been playing a strong role in the United Nations peacekeeping mission with the country’s armed forces and police personnel. As a top peacekeeping sending country, it has set a unique example of peace and harmony. Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed believes that Bangladesh’s current position in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission has been achieved with the opportune leadership and relentless support of the Honorable Prime Minister. He thanked the Prime Minister for this.

This is what he said in his speech as the senior peacekeeper of Bangladesh at the ‘International UN Peacekeeper Day-2024’ event organized at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on Wednesday (May 29) on the occasion of International UN Peacekeeper Day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke as the chief guest on the occasion.

Prime Minister graced the occasion

The army chief said, ‘Hon’ble Prime Minister, despite being busy, you graced our event by attending our event. For this, I congratulate you all. I express my deep gratitude and thanks to the honorable Prime Minister for giving me this rare opportunity.’

Bangladesh is a recognized and acceptable name in UN peacekeeping missions

Army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said that Bangladesh is a recognized and acceptable name in the UN peacekeeping mission today. He said, ‘which is a great honor and glory for all of us. I deeply believe that our development and achievements would never have been possible if Bangladesh had not been independent. Therefore, on this special day today, I remember with deep respect Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest father of the Bengali nation for thousands of years, the main shaper of our independence.’

‘In exchange for whose lifelong struggle and immense sacrifice, we got an independent country, a map and a proud identity. Now we are spreading the footprints of that identity with the flag of world peace. I respectfully remember all the brave freedom fighters including 30 lakh martyrs. Whose sacrifice has earned our dear freedom. I would like to pay special tribute to all the martyrs in UN peacekeeping missions. I pray for the forgiveness of all their departed souls and my deepest condolences to their families’ – added the army chief.

Behind Bangladesh’s achievements in protecting world peace

Bangladesh’s senior peacekeeper General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said, ‘In the United Nations General Assembly in September 1974, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman expressed Bangladesh’s moral position and support for world peace in unequivocal terms. Bangabandhu’s guidance, his framed constitution is shaping the spirit of our peacekeeping efforts. In response to the call of the United Nations, Bangladesh has been actively participating in the establishment of world peace since 1988. Currently, 4 thousand 970 people of Bangladesh Army, 352 people of Navy, 406 people of Air Force and 364 people of Police are engaged in 13 peacekeeping missions in different countries of the world. Along with the male members, women are also playing a leading role. So far 3 thousand 38 women peacekeepers from Bangladesh Armed Forces and Police have successfully participated in peacekeeping activities. Currently 493 members are engaged in peacekeeping operations.

He said, ‘Our achievement in maintaining world peace is a reflection of our rigorous training, professionalism, discipline, concern for human rights and above all widespread acceptance. In addition to this, our peacekeepers’ high moral values, impartial attitude, playing a leading role in protecting innocent people, etc., are distinguished human qualities that are especially appreciated in the UN environment. Which has greatly increased the status of our beloved motherland in the world. We had to sacrifice a lot for this special achievement. A total of 168 members including 131 members of our Army, 4 members of the Navy, 9 members of the Air Force and 24 members of the Police Force have sacrificed their lives and 266 have been seriously injured while serving in peacekeeping missions so far.

Always ready to face all challenges with proof of impartiality

General SM Shafiuddin said that there has been a huge change in the type and scale of global conflicts in the past years. He said, ‘Our peacekeepers are always ready to face all challenges by risking their lives with advanced training, integrity, efficiency and impartiality. You will be glad to know that recently a helicopter contingent of our army has been deployed in DR Congo for the first time in a peacekeeping mission. In addition, the Bangladesh Army has provided the Peruvian Armed Forces with Explosive Disposal Vehicles (Remotely Operated Vehicles) for use in peacekeeping missions – which has enhanced Bangladesh’s image in the global arena. Behind this overall upliftment and enviable success of our peacekeepers is our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s unwavering support and all-round patronage for world peace, which is a source of immense inspiration and encouragement to all of us.’
